Thank you for bearing with us as we transition to our new website layout. It is an ongoing process which will take a little time to settle down.
In this issue 314 we celebrate the Homeless World cup which took place recently. Having been there and witnessed at first hand what it is all about, I have to admit that it is difficult to express in words the effect this tournament has on both the participants and those who watch from the side lines. It is an emotional journey for sure, seeing people perhaps for the first time being part of something beyond the realm of their past experiences.
Seeing life in a different context, a camaraderie of equals beyond boundaries where people can truly be themselves without fear or judgement. Where individuals can express themselves not just on the field of sport but in their day to day existence where a sense of we’re all in it together permeates the ether. It is truly remarkable to see people grow and look forward to a a life beyond the struggles of the past and choose a pathway that is right for them going forward ,It is not easy but it is possible.
To inspire and elevate an individual to fulfil their true potential, that is what the Homeless World Cup and Street leagues is all about. In This issue Dara O Connor relates his life’s journey it’s a remarkable story showing the difficulties he has had to overcome as he sought to recover his life.
"A ball can change a life" - is the motto of the Irish Homeless Street Leagues - anyone who has witnessed the impact of the Street Leagues & Homeless World cup will subscribe to that.
Also in this issue we look at instances of surgeons operating on the wrong part in what is called a “never event”, an ironic term if one happens to be at the receiving end. While no one sets out to deliberately make a mistake, mistakes happen and we’ve all make them, we do not live in a perfect world.
As far as possible we all need to be informed to make sure we and our loved ones are properly treated and cared for, to speak up and not be deterred by the medical profession if you think something is not right say it. We are all human, no one is infallible.
Finally I do hope you enjoy reading the many articles in this edition. Please let us know if you have any comment or suggestions for content going forward.
All the best
