Editor's Note

With the Presidential elections on the horizon It must be said the electorate have been let down by the  established  political parties. The parties hierarchy have effectively denied Irish citizens a choice in candidates by neutering their own TDs and councillors  and effectively denying them the option to allow legitimate independent candidates a pathway to the ballot box.

That someone whoever they may be, has the courage, desire and ability  to put themselves forward as a candidate is to be commended and respected. The fact that they need 4 councils or 20 TDs to nominate them is a substantial hurdle in itself.

Should the potential candidate be of sound character, make a worthy, impressive and viable presentation TDs and councillors if they desire and in the interests of democracy can  allow them to present the people with a choice, after all we are looking for the best candidate for the role of President, surely that is what is important.

It is an opportunity missed to show true Democracy.

Across the Atlantic we  see American’s support of Israel’s genocidal polices in Gaza as an afront to humanity. Having spent some time in the USA I have great affinity with American people but  it has to be said a lot of what goes on in the greater world passes them by. News reporting in the States is mainly limited to local stations whose focus is local affairs. While the major news networks are pretty much divided into pro Trump and anti Trump.

The public’s knowledge of what is really going on in Gaza and the West Bank is very limited and largely defined by a bias Israeli controlled media and political figures who are heavily influence by AIPAC an Israeli lobby group who exercise control way beyond their size.  Meanwhile  American taxpayers are conned into funding Netanyahu’s Genocide in Gaza. To call attention to this is to be labelled anti semitic  which is a convenient way for Israel and its supporters to blacklist anyone who speaks the truth about their activities. It is a tragedy for all concerned.

It's not all doom and gloom however in this edition of Ireland’s Big Issue we ask Joseph Carrig what it meant to him to represent Ireland in the Homeless World Cup, it is quite inspiring to read what he has to say.

Until next month all the best and Thank you for your support

Sean
